Prospective students

Thank you for your interest in studying psychology as a teaching subject at TU Dortmund University!

The TU Dortmund University is the only university in North Rhine-Westphalia that offers a study of psychology as a teaching subject for a teaching profession at grammar schools and comprehensive schools as well as vocational colleges. In the teaching degree program, courses from two teaching subjects and from the educational sciences must be studied (2-subject bachelor's degree).

In the following, we have compiled some basic information for you, which should help you on your way into your studies.

Study opportunities

At the Faculty of Education and Sociology, the subject of psychology can be studied for a teaching degree at grammar schools and comprehensive schools or at vocational colleges. In addition, there is the possibility to study psychology as a minor subject within the framework of some other degree programs.

Please note: No psychologists or school psychologists are trained at the TU Dortmund University. The course of study is also not geared towards later employment in therapy.

The study of psychology as a teaching subject includes subject-specific scientific and subject-specific didactic content and prepares students for work in the field of school and education. The scope of subject-specific courses in the bachelor's and master's programs of this 2-subject program is considerably lower than in the 1-subject programs of psychology.

The creditability of the achievements acquired at the TU Dortmund University for a "pure" psychology study at another university is neither sought nor guaranteed. For a transfer to a master's program in psychology, bachelor's graduates with psychology as a teaching subject may lack some of the necessary credits.
